About us

Arhiva Plastică is an online multimedia archive with documentation on the modern and contemporary art in Romania, presented in an innovative manner that is focused on cultural research and mediation. We aim to bring forth to the art loving public a series of original, previously unpublished documents, curated by specialists in the field.

The Arhiva Plastică project was born out of Quadro Association’s archive, a physical archive that contains over 18000 negatives, documents, manuscripts, either donated or purchased, and a comprehensive specialised library with over 3500 volumes. The materials originate from the archives of artists (manuscripts, photographs, documents related to the artistic life, letter writings, sketchbooks), photographers involved in the artistic life, and the research of art historians. The archive is in a permanent state of expansion through new media like interviews, podcasts and photo and video documentation.

Arhiva Plastică wishes to address some of the needs of the working art environment by providing access to valuable materials about the recent history of Romanian art, as well as research on artists or artistic movements. Furthermore, the archive wants to offer a contextualized approach to these themes, to wider audiences and emerging professionals alike, in a digitally accessible way.

The project team consists of three art historians - Sebestyén Székely (project initiator), Andreea Cărăușu (project coordinator) and Hunor Vécsei (archive coordinator).
